3 out of 5 stars Tough to hold on to   January 8, 2009
Kindle is great for the avid reader with space and dollar savings over time. Changeable type size is great. Problems: Kindle doesn't want to stay in case. Tab in case to hook on back of Kindle is not most efficient and back cover of Kindle itself tends to slip off. You also have to develop a strategy for holding the Kindle. Almost entire right-front of unit is a "page forward." Almost entire left-front is "back page" and "next page" buttons. I spend some time getting to the current page because of pressing these buttons while just trying to hold and read.

5 out of 5 stars Kindle Rocks!!   January 8, 2009
I don't think I need to go into the ins and outs of what the Kindle does since it is clearly mapped out for you on the site. I will say that I LOVE THIS STINKING THING!!! My Kindle goes with me everywhere. I am an avid reader and having this device keeps the amount of books I have on my shelves to a minimum (which my husband is happy about). I tend to read more than one book at a time so instead of dragging around two books in my purse I just have the Kindle which is very light weight and takes up about the same amount of space as a paperback.

It has many neat features but I was sold on the built in dictionary. You can look up a word quickly while you are reading. How awesome is that?? There are some sites you can go to and download free books but a lot of times you have to do a lot of digging around to find something you'd actually want to read. (probably why they're free) I recommend it to everyone who likes to read and I find myself talking about it a lot and showing it off to people.

I personally do not have any experience with any other electronic reader but I love my Kindle. Once you get one and start playing around with it you'll fall in love with like many people who own them have.

5 out of 5 stars I love my Kindle!   January 8, 2009
I have had my Kindle for over a month now, so I think I have enough experience with it to give a pretty fair review. First of all, I was so excited to see how small and light it was! I read the dimensions, but for some reason thought it would be bigger. I really like the seperate switches for the power and the wireless. It's nice to turn off the wireless when you don't need it (really saves the battery power). The battery seems to have a really long life to it. I've made it through whole books without recharging (if the wireless is off).

I think I am going to upgrade the cover though. I haven't had any serious problems with the cover it came with, but I'm uncomfortable having such an expensive item held in by only two corners (all on the left side). My FIL has a cover that holds in all four and I think I'd like that better. There is no backlight and that's just fine by me. I got the Mighty Bright LED light and it works great.

The buttons. It took a bit of getting used to, but I've gotten very good at not pushing the buttons and losing my place. I do read with the cover so I just hold on to the bit of cover that sticks on on the left hand side. I have a hard time reading without the cover because I end up pushing all the buttons and it gets frustrating. I do like how it saves your place in each book or magazine.

I read mainly novels, so I don't have the problems that others have had with the magazines (graphs and pics being done poorly). I haven't had any problems with the wireless either. I live in Northern Utah and get at least three bars (sometimes only two in my bedroom).

Overall, I've really enjoyed the Kindle. It fits in my purse (I put it in a gallon zip bag because it's currently snowy here) and take it everywhere. I have some children's books on it and has been great at the doctors office to read to the kids. I do wish there was a folder system to sort books though. Would be nice but it's easy enough to work around. I just use the show and sort feature to find what I'm looking for.

4 out of 5 stars MINOR SUGGESTIONS FOR DESIGN   January 8, 2009
I love my Kindle, but would like to see a couple minor design changes. I find it hard to keep my place with the large 'next page' and 'back page' buttons. I think they could be smaller in the upper half close to center so you can hold on to the Kindle better. I'd also like to have the on/off switch somewhere on the side or top instead of the back so it doesn't have a tendency to fall out of the cover.

I'd also like the cover to be redesigned to keep the Kindle safer from falling out. Could one be designed that has a hook at the top that would go up when putting it into the cover and then down to hook over the top to keep it in place? Also, add more of a pouch at the bottom and sides that is part faux leather and part clear vinyl so you can press the keyboard when needed, but it is more protected again from falling and breaking.

I want to keep my Kindle safe!

Thanks!

1 out of 5 stars Obsurd Price   January 8, 2009

Let me know when the price goes down on both the device and the electronic books. I'd rather read books. They cost less! You can't tell me that the cost electronically makes any sense, when the hard copy is cheaper. Its just not worth it. I'm very interested in getting the device, but the cost is just outlandish.
