Editorial Reviews:
Product Description Understanding the immune system is crucial for both medical and bioscience students, with new research revealing yet more secrets year on year. Many books offer in-depth introductions to the subject, but How the Immune System Works remains uniquely popular for its personable and practical overview of the nuts and bolts of the immune system.
This third edition provides a perfect introduction to the essential principles of the immune system, covered in humorous but highly informative 'lectures' accompanied by clear and accessible illustrations. It is perfect for exam preparation or as an enjoyable overview of a difficult subject. Both students and instructors will welcome the clarity and authority that Lauren Sompayrac brings to this timely revision.

how to explain the immune system to a 3rd grader March 26, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is basically taking the immune system and explaining it to a third grader. Some of the language seems quite over-simplified. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing. It does go into some detail, but by no means extensively. It has really helped me grasp the "big picture" of a lot of things that are lost in the muddle of the CD## and IL-## and TNF# and etc etc if you've ever read any other immune system book. Use it as a supplement to your regular textbook!
review February 23, 2009 I really like this book because I find it to be rather technical and thourough but quick about it. So if you want a little (but tall) book to give you all the details of how the immune system works then this would be an excellent choice.
Wonderful primer January 19, 2009 This text provides a wonderful overview to immunology principles, and serves as a great introduction to the material. Sompayrac simplifies concepts and gives commonplace visual examples that you will never forget. For undergraduate work, this text may suffice, but easily finds its place alongside graduate texts as a primer.
Can save your life... or your grade. October 14, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered this book for FAST shipping 4 days before my first medical school final exam. What I was most impressed with is the great overview that let me place all my specific knowledge (the prof's love the detail...) into a big picture scheme. I especially love how they liken the MHC receptor's to hot-dog buns.
A fun book to read (even when doing immunology) and SUPER helpful and quick to get through. I did very well with this book.
Not a good primary text for studying and also not helpful for board review, but a great introduction for people who need the big picture of the immune system fast. Also helps you understand the players in a fun and accessible way. A GREAT resource for those without prior immuno expereience
Good book September 27, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this book for a graduate class I am taking in immunology; although, I didn't really need it, it was helpful.
